Violence rocks Kisumu rally

By KBC Reporter ( Sunday, October 30, 2005)

Veteran politician Odongo Omamo is undergoing treatment at Aga Khan hospital in Kisumu after the youth opposed to the proposed new constitution attacked and injured him. Omamo was attacked outside Moi stadium.

Police in Kisumu were compelled to shoot in the air to disperse rowdy youth threatening to disrupt a campaign meeting at the Moi stadium for drumming up support for the draft constitution.

The police also arrested two youth of the orange camp at the 10.30 am incident who attacked and beat up a youth spotting a banana t-shirt.

Six police vehicles are stationed at the stadium to back up a riot squad commanded by Kisumu OCPD Titus Kilonzi.

The minister for Information and Communication Raphae Tuju was forced to return to Milimani Estate when he ran into a hostile group of youth at around 10 am near the Imperial Hotel who threatened to pelt him with stones and Oranges.

The Orange youth have taken control of Kondole Estate and a road linking Kakamega road with the Moi Stadium where they have closed the road with disused tyres and stones.

There was high tension around the stadium and no one has entered the stadium because of fear of being caught in a fracas.

Police had been also posted to all entry points to Kisumu town and were searching public and p rivate cars to confirm they would not be a threat to the banana rally.
